An hour east of Agadir in the fertile Souss plain, Taroudant is often called the little Marrakech for its magnificent ochre ramparts, which stretch several kilometres around the old town. Walk or take a horse-drawn caleche around the honey-coloured walls, then dive into two lively souks: the Arab souk and the Berber souk, known for silver jewellery, carpets, spices and leather. The town squares, Place Assarag and Place Talmoklate, are perfect for people-watching over a mint tea. It is a place to wander slowly rather than tick off sights.
